Hi Tim,

Thanks for your guest lecture last night (at UTS, Sydney).

I think the concept of coalition of the willing is tremendously exciting – using the internet to connect vastly diverse groups to fight an on the ground offensive against global warming would be a positive thing for a disenfranchised post-Copenhagen activists, thinkers and businesses to engage with.

It also opens up possibilities for people who haven’t been immersed in the science or politics so far. My experience is that many people want to help fight this “war” but are generally confused about what they can do and if anything they do will make a difference anyway.

I first considered the project as a campaign in itself, but I now have more of an understanding that the film is a conversation starter, a way to raise awareness of a different approach we could all take using the internet.

However, I still believe that there will be loads of people who will watch the film, feel incredibly energised by its message, then not really know what to do as the first step to being part of this creative solution – hopefully this forum will spark many more conversations on the possibilities.

I’m also interested in your concept of a swarm, as my experience of campaigning, organisations get their constituencies together, decide on the strategy and then enact the campaign – in most cases it’s certainly a top-down structure in terms of implementation, and in some cases, it’s a top-down structure in terms of campaign planning as well.

Other campaigns or organisations may line up and form alliances and coalitions, but these alliances are sometimes fragile and in some cases can be easily fractured. They come together usually when the campaign target (threat) is so clear and overwhelming that groups temporarily forget their differences and get on with the job of winning that campaign. When the campaign is over, the organisations head back to their respective bunkers and agendas.

So while I’d love this “direct action through digital collaboration” approach to succeed and I hope that it would be possible given that sites like Wikipedia have been so successful, I see a key challenge.

The grassroots movement to fight global warming would need vast scale of participants (both organisations and individuals) to make traditional “alliances” or agreements between groups irrelevant in the context of the winning the war on global warming.

Another reason for the need for scale is that this will be a long, drawn-out battle, and more people could mitigate the risk that people run out of energy to continue fighting.

I also think organsations that are already engaged in grassroots campaigning on global warming would have to be open and prepared to relinquish some control over their participants, which could be a challenge to organisations that are used to working in more of a top-down manner.

All in all, it's a top way to start a conversation, as the film stands to engage an really diverse array of people. Are you going to translate it as well?

In case you haven't seen it yet - Adam Curtis' 4-part BBC documentary "The Century of the Self" expands on that segment, and is an absolute must-see in my opinion. Thrilling!
It has never been released on DVD because of licensing issues (you will see why...), but it can be watched on Google Video.

So the notion that you can buy an identity, replaced the original movement notion that you were perfectly free to create an identity. And [that] you were perfectly free to change the world and make the world anything you wanted it to be.

Sweet! Congrats, that is some great work!

Not sure if a German translation is already considered/worked on, but I would be happy to join in if help is needed or start working on subtitles together with other folks. The availability of the script helps a lot, so it shouldn't be that difficult - especially if native speakers from both languages work together. Sadly, I am really busy until july 12th - more time after that.

P.S.: these forums are a bit tough to find from the main site...

I am so excited to see this effort to pull the creative minds of the world together in an effort to wake up a sleeping world population.
I also am gratified to see the section of the film devoted to the movements of the sixties. I am 55 and grew up in the Western US somewhat insulated from the burning cities of the time but became very much aware.
I have devoted my life to finding an alternative way of living that mostly led to voluntary poverty but gave me the freedom to pursue many different avenues to defining what that alternative may be. I'm still searching.
Fifteen years ago I met, fell in love with, and married one of the original Rainbow Family members. I also was brought into a loose knit but loyal community of people who have been working toward peaceful means of defining what community and cultural change may be for the last 39 years.
Currently my wife Feather and I have thrown our bit of accumulated wealth together with seven other people and bought 40 acres of forested land 30 miles outside of Missoula, Montana. Our intention is to create an intentional green community of people who are working together to create a working model of community that is utilizing extreme green building practices for our houses and working towards as much food security as possible by utilizing permacultural practices.
Our ultimate goal is to build a cooperative, low impact, self sustaining community that can be used as a model for others to emulate.
We are apart of the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN).
One of our members just returned from Columbia where he attended the Call of the Mountain gathering of Columbian ecovillages. He was on the Rainbow Caravan, a mobile EV, that passed through ten years earlier and dropped seeds of change that have grown up to be a vibrant and growing movement through out Central and South America. We intend to plant those seeds in the Western US as well.
Many of us are artists in this group. I am a graphic designer working on a Media Arts degree. I am fired up about motion graphics and the potential for story telling and education. The man I mentioned above is a film maker and teaches documentary film making.
Feather is an art teacher at a Spanish immersion international school in Missoula. When I saw this website and the cooperative nature of the message I found myself seeing the manifestation of a dream that we all share.
By god your doing it! Thank you
Bronte girl on "60s Counter culture vs an environmental movement"

Hi,
Congrats on the site Tim and everyone. Really interesting animation, the 60s bit by World Leaders is hilarious...love it.

I read through the script and although you make a convincing argument for a grass-roots environmental movement, I'm not sure you can compare this to the counter-culture. For one thing, protesters in North America in the late 60s faced struggles which impacted heavily on their day to day lives; the Vietnam war, race inequality, gender inequality and so on. Although global warming is effecting us all and will continue to do so more and more, it's effects are more 'slow burn' and gradual. I think human kind needs sharp spikes of discomfort to spur them into action. Although climate change is the biggest challenge we've ever faced, it's kind of a hidden enemy. By the time its effects blight our lives (Water / food shortages, mass migration etc) and we're spurred into action, it could well be too late.

I'd be happy for anyone to tell me I'm wrong :)

It's good to see a film being 'open' like this - more films should show their dev work and processes
